March Madness Challenge Top 5 Winners!

In March we challenged our community to take a minimum of 20 classes in 31 days, and to complete daily mini mind-body challenges. Here are 2 of the top 5 participants, who totally knocked it out of the park!

Blair

Erin: Why did you join the March Madness Wellness Challenge?

Blair: Well, I love Align, I love a challenge, and I can't play basketball so I figured this would be a perfect opportunity for my own March Madness:)

Erin: What motivated you to keep going when the going got tough?

Blair: My cat usually wakes me up at 5:30am to start his own cardio and circuit training  and he is in really good shape so I wanted to follow his lead!

Erin: What did you feel like you gained from the challenge?

Blair: Motivation and muscle tone! When I finish an align class I'm already thinking about the next one. I may just quit my day job:)

Michelle

Erin: Why did you join the March Madness Wellness Challenge?

Michelle: I wanted to prove to myself that I could actually do it!

Erin: What motivated you to keep going when the going got tough?

Michelle: One source of motivation came from a great book I've been reading called "No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness."  It was recommended to me by Jen during the Posture and Movement Workshop she teaches at Align BK.  One of the main takeaways from the book is that many of us fail to meet our fitness goals because we are exercising for reasons like "weight loss" or "better health" that don't give us the instant gratification that we need to stay motivated.  The author makes a pretty strong case for throwing out common conceptions about what exercise "should" be and why we "should" do it in favor of simply moving our bodies in ways that we find enjoyable and focusing on the short-term benefits we get from that movement.  As a result, I've been working lately to focus more on those short-term benefits: improved mood, lower stress levels, and lower pain levels!

Secondly, I looped everyone in on what I was doing, including my friends, my coworkers, and my parents.  I posted frequently about my progress in my Instagram story and everyone was extremely encouraging!  I also had a lot of support from instructors whose classes I frequented and the Align BK staff.  Having people rooting for me definitely helped keep me going.

Erin: What did you feel like you gained from the challenge?

Michelle: As a plus-size person with chronic pain, I've definitely gained a new appreciation for my body and what I'm physically capable of achieving in it.  I'm also seeing concrete benefits from prioritizing self-care.  Overall, the challenge was a great experience for me!
