Q+A with Cat Murcek:


Yoga instructor & dance artist.

What sparked your interest in yoga, Pilates, and/or barre?

I started taking yoga classes to compliment my training in contemporary dance.

When did you decide to start teaching these practices?

As I gradually put more wear and tear on my body with my dance career I became increasingly interested in the healing arts. My first yoga teacher training in 2009 was a natural progression for me since I already had a fairly strong body awareness and understanding of anatomy.

What fuels your inspiration and creativity?

Music, movement and visiting new places.

Favorite pose or workout?

I have so many favorite poses--as my students can attest--but for right now I'll say King Arthur using a rope wall.

Favorite jams to listen to while teaching?

I prefer not to listen to music while teaching. It can certainly create a fun atmosphere, and I'll do it every once in awhile, but it often distracts me from what I want to say and can distract the students away from their inner awareness as well. However, a quiet looping of Tibetan singing bowls is always nice! :)

Favorite “healthy” treat?

Berries and whole fat plain yogurt with raw hemp seeds on top, all organic!

Wellness is important to you because…?

We only get one life, so the better we take care of ourselves, the more we can enjoy it!

Improvising dance to music that I'm really into.

Three words that describe your style?

Centering, alignment-focused, therapeutic.

What challenges have you grown from and overcome while teaching and/or while practicing yoga?

As a result of having scoliosis and asking a lot of my body on a daily basis, I have been dealing with chronic pain for quite a few years now.  My yoga practice has taught me how to be more aware of my habits and how to take care of my body to keep the pain at bay. I see it as a blessing in disguise because it was my pain that set me on this path of healing, anatomical research, and discovery that inspired me to share what I've learned with others and hopefully help them in the same ways. I am proud to say I am now a certified yoga therapist because of this path.

That's really hard but I think froyo but I really love Gelato!

Happiness is…?

On a boat in turquoise waters under the sun.

Favorite Brooklyn cafe?

I think Postmark Cafe on 6th St.

Coffee or tea?

Usually tea but I enjoy indulging in a sweet coffee drink every once in awhile too :)

Last movie you saw in theaters…?

LA LA land

What brings you the most joy?

Dancing, seeing my students make new discoveries in their practices, traveling, and watching animals and children do their thing.
