June Instructor Spotlight: Jen Gorman!
Q+A with Jen Gorman:
Health and wellness specialist, professional dancer, and recovering Certified Public Accountant
What sparked your interest in yoga, Pilates, and/or barre?
I started taking yoga as cross training to realign my body from the hours and hours I spent in rehearsals and dance class. It was the first time I felt control over my back pain!
When did you decide to start teaching these practices?
I was dancing for Thodos Dance Chicago and all of the company members also taught and choreographed. I said yes to an offer to teach Dance Fitness, Introduction to Ballet, and Introduction to Yoga through Chicago Sport & Social (Chicago's largest organizer of coed recreational sports). I loved teaching these classes and quickly thereafter started a yoga teacher training program!
What fuels your inspiration and creativity?
The human body is amazing and complex! I love taking the time to figure out the best variation of a pose or strength training exercise for someone.
Favorite pose or workout?
Traction! I love the rope wall, especially downward facing dog and bat hang.
Favorite jams to listen to while teaching?
The quiet of people breathing and experiencing their body. I think we're a little overstimulated in NYC.
Favorite affirmation and or/quote?
"This too shall pass," which I learned from my mother who is one of the strongest humans I've ever met. She has faced many difficulties in life with a smile on her face and a joy for life.

Wellness is important to you because…?
I'm not going to waste my shot.
Three words to describe yourself today?
Inspired, Joyful, and Grateful

Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar
Places you want to visit?
You feel most ecstatic and confident when you are?
Performing a show I know well. Last year I went to Dallas to dance in a production of Show Boat that I had done at the Kennedy Center 3 year prior. I loved revisiting this show! I felt like I could really let go and portray a character instead of worrying about the steps or what came next.
Your spirit animal is?
Three words that describe your style?
Alignment, alignment, alignment (patient and focused too!)
What challenges have you grown from and overcome while teaching and/or while practicing yoga, barre, Pilates…?
I had spinal fusion surgery for scoliosis when I was 12. That means I have a metal rod in my back! I've learned what feels good (traction!), what I need to modify, and what I need to not even attempt.
Ice cream or FROYO?
Favorite Brooklyn cafe?
Sit & Wonder
Coffee or tea?
I go through phases with each! In the summer I'm a big fan of iced coffee and then in the winter I love cup upon cup of hot tea.
