Q+A with Nicole James:


Yoga/ Fitness Instructor

What sparked your interest in yoga, Pilates, and/or barre?

I have always been interested in wellness, I approach health holistically encompassing mind, body and spirit. The beginning of my journey lead me to studying nutrition, then herbal remedies and eventually meditation and yoga.

When did you decide to start teaching these practices?

After two years of practicing I knew I discovered a new home for myself. My mentor taught classes according to the cycles of the moon and encouraged students to REALLY explore their practice. I enjoyed her challenging yet intelligent flow. Four years into my practice she inspired me to teach.

What fuels your inspiration and creativity?

Curiosity inspires me to challenge myself, think outside of the box and grow in my practice. I approach my mat as if I am staring at a blank canvas that is waiting for me to pour my heart and soul into it--at that point I am guided by intuition.

Favorite pose or workout?

Wow! Favorite pose? Not sure if I have one although humble warrior was the first one to pop into my head. My favorite workout is a very intense vinyasa flow.

Favorite jams to listen to while teaching?

If I'm teaching yoga I enjoy mellow electronic and acoustic songs. If I am teaching a high impact intense class, hip hop and uptempo electronic are preferred.

Favorite affirmation and or/quote?

Carpe diem will always be my favorite aphorism because the only thing promised to us is the present moment.

Favorite “healthy” treat?

Carrots and hummus

Wellness is important to you because…?

When I walk by those giant blackboards that ask pedestrians to write down something they want to do before they die. I always grab a piece chalk and write "To make the world a happier and healthier place." I wake up everyday with this in mind. If we help each other make better decisions for our overall health we can improve communities, cities, nations...the world.

Three words to describe yourself today?

Pensive, Focused, Positive.

Coolest place you have been?

Costa Rica--that's also where I did my teacher training

Places you want to visit?

Nairobi, Greece, and Portugal.

You feel most ecstatic and confident when you are?

Teaching or on stage (comedy is a new hobby for me)

Your Patronus is?



Three words that describe your style?

Spunky, Open, Progressive.

What challenges have you grown from and overcome while teaching and/or while practicing yoga, barre, Pilates…?

Fighting the impulse to do what you want which isn't always conducive with what you need. I have grown into the yogi that practices sometimes counter intuitively because subconsciously I might refrain from the poses I need the most.

Ice cream

Happiness is…?

A positive mindset which must be consciously cultivated and practiced.

Favorite Brooklyn cafe?

Cafe Madeline by FAR!

Coffee or tea?

Tea, coffee makes me jittery.

Last movie you saw in theaters…?


What brings you the most joy?

I'm an extrovert and definitely thrive when I'm around people. Being able to share experiences with friends and family brings me the most joy.
