Instructor Spotlight: Nicholas Macaluso!
Q+A with Nick Macaluso:
Movement Trainer and Healing Artist
What sparked your interest in yoga, Pilates, barre and/or functional fitness?
When I was eight years old I began practicing capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian rhythmic martial art culture), and I quickly fell in love with it. The movement aspect of capoeira is the epitome of functional fitness, but it is not a holistic practice. Because of that, I began practicing yoga, kickboxing, and HIIT-style bootcamps as complimentary movement practices. Once I started to branch out of capoeira though, I realized that my true love was not necessarily capoeira, but the freedom functional and free-form movement gave my body and mind to move and express itself.
Why did you decide to start teaching these practices?
I initially started teaching capoeira eight years ago because it was my love and passion. Teaching it brought me to life like nothing else. I realized then that I have a natural affinity for teaching, and have stuck with it since. After several years of training, I started teaching yoga and HIIT-style bootcamps alongside capoeira because of my desire to eventually develop a movement class that fuses all of their core elements together.
What fuels your inspiration and creativity?
My inspiration and creativity is fueled primarily by 1) my search for self-authenticity, self-expression, and freedom, 2) my role models (Ido Portal, Nahko Bear, Ghylian Bell, Elon Musk, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson, to name a few...) and 3) my unceasing need to be the best possible version of myself that I can be, and to inspire others to be the best version of themselves they can be.
Favorite pose or workout?
My favorite workout is a game called, "Movement Cypher" in which two or more people try to dodge one another's contact while staying within the negative space of each other, with the objective of moving as creatively as possible and playing with your partner(s).
